Prepare The Water
The first thing you'll need to do is prepare the water by testing and balancing it. If the alkalinity and pH levels are not correct, you will end up with bacteria in the water that will need to be cleaned out later. Make sure you test the water regularly and add an algaecide to the water.
The water level will also need to be lowered so that it is beneath the water skimmer levels. This will prevent water from getting into filtration equipment that you will be draining of water. There are plenty of things in the pool that will need to be removed before the winter comes. Ladders are an obvious item, but you'll also need to remove things like wall fittings and skimmer baskets.
Vacuum The Pool
Chances are that there is debris in the pool that needs to be removed, so get prepared to vacuum the pool. All of the surfaces need to be cleaned to get rid of any algae that could be stuck to them. This means getting out that special vacuum equipment to brush the walls and floor.
Drain The Equipment
Your heating, filtration, and chlorinating equipment all need to be drained prior to winter. It's not enough to drain the equipment; you also need to blow out all of the pipes with water. Antifreeze should then be added to ensure that water does not get into the equipment, freeze, and expand during the winter.
Cover The Pool
You'll need some sort of cover to put over the pool. If you have a solid cover, that will ensure that no debris gets into the pool during the winter. However, a mesh net can still work for catching debris. A mesh net also cost a fraction of the cost of having a solid cover.
